The ancient name of Amravati is “Udumbravati”, its Prakrut form is “Umbravati” and “Amravati” has been known by this name for many centuries. The mispronunciation of the word is Amravati and now Amravati is known for it. Amravati is said to have got its name from the ancient temple of Ambadevi.
Ancient evidence of Amravati’s existence is found in an inscription carved in stone on the base of the marble statue of the Adinath god (Jain god) Rishabhnath. This proves that these statues were placed here in 1097.Govind Maha Prabhu visited Amravati in the 13th century, at the same time Warhad was under the rule of the Hindu king Deogiri (Yadav). In the 14th century, there was a famine (drought) in Amravati. People left Amravati and moved to Gujrat and Malva.
The local population was brought back to Amravati after a few years, resulting in a low population density. In the 16th century, Mager Aurangpura (now “Sabanpura”) was gifted to Jumma Majseed by Badashah Aurangzeb. It shows that Muslims and Hindus used to live here together. In 1722 Chhatrapati Shahoo Maharaj gave Amravati and Badner to Shri Ranoji Bhosle before Amravati became known as Bhosle ki Amravati.
The city was rebuilt and prospered by Ranoji Bhosle after the Treaty of Devgaon and Anjangaon Surji and victory over Gavilgad (Chikhaldara Fortress). British author General Wellesly camped at Amravati. This particular place is still recognized as a camp by the Amravati people.
The city of Amravati was founded in the late 18th century. The union state of Nizam and Bosala was ruled by Amravati in .They appointed a Treasury official, but the defense system was destroyed. Fort Gavilgad was captured by the British on December 15, 1803. According to the Treaty of Deogaon, Warhad was presented as proof of friendship with the Nizam. From then on, Warhad had a monopoly on the Nizams. Around 1805 the Pendharies attacked the city of Amravati.
