The Airports Authority of India(AAI) is a statutory body of the Government of India’s Department of Civil Aviation. It is responsible for theconstruction,modernization,maintenance and management of civil aviation infrastructure in India. It provides communications,navigationandairtrafficmanagement (CNS/ATM) services in Indian airspace and adjacent oceanic areas.
AAI currently operates a total of 137 airports, including 34 international airports, 10, customsairports, 81 domestic airports, and 23 civilian enclaves with in military airports. AAI also has ground facilities at all airports and 25 other locations to ensure safeflight operations.AAI covers all major airwayson the Indian continent with 29 radar installations at 11 locations aswell as 700 VOR/DVOR installations together with distancemeasuringequipment (DME).
52 runways have“ILS”instrumentlandingsystems with night landing capabilities at most of these airports and an automaticmessageswitchingsystem at 15 airports. The Government of India established the International Airports Authority of India (IAAI) in 1972 to manage domestic international airports while the National Airports Authority of India (NAAI) was established in 1986 to manage domestic airports.
The organizations were merged in April 1995 by an Act of Parliament, namely the Airports Authority of India Act1994, and incorporated as a publicbody and named the Airports Authority of India (AAI). This new organizationwould be responsible for thecreation,modernization,maintenance and managementofthecountry’s civil aviation infrastructure, both on the ground and in the airspace.
