The Assam Rifles (AR) area government-controlled paramilitary force responsible for border security, counter-insurgency and maintaining law and order in north-eastern India. It guards the India-Burmese border. The AR is one of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) administered by the Home Office.
Indian Army retains operational control of the Assam rifles.Becauseitis a police force, its hiring ,compensation, promotion and retirement policies are governed by theprovisionsof CAPF . About80% of the officers are from the Army, the rest from the AR. The AR is commanded by the Director General of the Assam Rifles (DG AR), who is appointed by the Ministry of theInterior.
AR is nicknamed “TheGuardians of the Northeast”; and “Friends of the Hilltribes”. It is India’s oldest paramilitary force, originally formed in 1835 as the Cachar Levy, a militia taskedwithprotectingthe tea plantations and fertile plains of Assam from unruly tribes. Its range increased as the British Raj expandedintonorth-eastIndia and was used against insurgents in the region.
The force was renamedthe Assam Border Police in 1883, the Assam Military Police in 1891 and the East Bengal and Assam Military Police in 1913. It received its current name in 1917. After regaining independence, AR operated under the supervision of theStateDepartment .Operational control was transferred to the Indian Army after the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
In1965itwasadministeredby the Ministry of theInterior, with the Army retaining operational control. Throughouttheir history, Assam rifles have beenused in many roles, conflicts and theaters, including World War I, where they served in Europe and the Middle East, and World War II, where they served primarily in Burma. After the Chinese annexation of Tibet, Assameseskirmishers were tasked with controllingtheAssamese section of the Tibetan border. They have also playedakeyrole in maintaining law and order in Arunachal Pradesh.
