By 1965, the India-Pakistan border was occupied by the State Armed Police Battalion. On April 9, 1965, Pakistan attacked Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet in Kutch. This revealed the inability of the State Armed Police to deal with armed aggression, which has led the Indian government to feel the need for a dedicated, centrally controlled and trained Armed Border Patrol Force to protect the international border with Pakistan.

According to the recommendations of the Committee of Secretaries of , the Border Security Force was established on December 1, 1965, the first leader and founding father of which was Shri KF Rustamji IP. Initially in 1965, the BSF was increased by 25 billion and over time it was expanded as the nation needed to fight militants in Punjab, J&K, the Northeast region, etc.Currently, the BSF has 192 bln (including 03 NDRF) and 07 BSF artillery regiments guarding the international border with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

In addition, the BSF also assumes the role of counter-infiltration in the Kashmir Valley, counterinsurgency operations in the Northeast region, anti-Naxal operations in Odisha and Chhattisgarh states, and securing integrated checkpoints along the international border with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
