Durg District is one of the most densely populated districts in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. Based on climate and topography, the state of Chhattisgarh is divided into three agroclimatic zones. Bilaspur, Raipur, Janjgeer-Champa, Raigarh, Rajnandgaon, Kawardha, Durg, Mahasamund, Dhamtari, Korba and parts of Kanker belong to the “Plains of Chhattisgarh”.Durg District is located in the southern part of the rich Chhattisgarh Plains. Sheonath is the main river in Durg district. The Shivnath River is a tributary of the Mahanadi River. The Shivnath River originates from a 625-meter-high mountain in Panabaras in the southwestern part of Rajnandgaon and flows in a northeasterly direction.
The river Shivnath is about 345 km long.The city of Durg is located on the east bank of the Shivnath River. It flows in a northeasterly direction through Khujji, Rajnandgaon, Durg, Dhasmha and Nandghat and empties into Mahanadi near Shivari Narayan in Bilaspur District. The Kharun River flows in the eastern part of Petehua District in Balod District. This river flows north and joins the Shivnath River at Somnath. This river marks the boundary of Raipur and Durg districts.The length of this river is about 120 km.
This district has rich deposits of high quality limestone. Limestone quarrying continues at Nandini, Semariya, Khundani, Pithaura, Sahgaon, Deurjhaal, Ahiwara, Achcholi, Matragota, Ghotwani and Medesara. The limestone obtained in this way is used by ACC mainly for cement production and CLT for steel production. The climate of the department is tropical.Summer is a little hotter. The rise in temperature begins from March to May. May is among other things the hottest. Average annual rainfall in Durg district is 1052 mm. Throughout the year, most precipitation falls in the monsoon months of June to September.July is the month with the most rainfall.
