Today’s Kannada name Bengalūru was declared the official name of the city in 2006.

Bangalore is sometimes dubbed “India’s Silicon Valley” (or “India’s IT Capital”) due to its role as the country’s leading information technology (IT) exporter. Indian technology companies ISRO, Infosys, Wipro and HAL are based in the city.

The demographically diverse city of Bangalore is the second fastest growing metropolis in India.It houses many educational and research institutions in India such as Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Management (Bangalore) (IIMB), National Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore, National Institute of Design, Bangalore (NID R&D Campus ), the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS).

The city is home to many government aerospace and defense organizations such as Bharat Electronics, Hindustan Aeronautics and National Aerospace Laboratories. The city is also home to the Kannada film industry.
