During the presentation of the railway budget for 2005-2006, the Minister of Railways made the historic announcement of the establishment of the DFC in the Sejm hall. In April 2005, the project was discussed at the Japan-India Summit.
This was part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Prime Ministers of India and Japan for a feasibility study and possible Japanese government funding of dedicated rail freight corridors. The feasibility study report was submitted to the Ministry of Railways in October 2007.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways has taken steps to establish a dedicated vehicle for the construction, operation and maintenance of dedicated freight corridors.This led to the establishment of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) which undertook the design and development, financial mobilization, construction, operation and expansion.
Maintenance and commercial development of dedicated freight corridors. DFCCIL was incorporated on October 30, 2006 as a publicly traded company under the Companies Act 1956.
