This Bokaro District was established on April 1, 1991 by removing CD Chas and Chandankiyari blocks from Dhanbad District and all of Bermo subdivision from Giridih District, then merging into a new district.

Bokaro district is bordered by Dhanbad district and part of West Bengal state to the east, Ramgarh district to the west, Purulia district of West Bengal to the south, and parts of Giridih, Hazaribag and Dhanbad districts to the north. The district extends from 23o26″ to 23o57″ north latitude and from 85o34″ to 86o26″ east latitude.The district lies at an altitude of 200 to 546 m above mean sea level. .

The Settlement Report for Manbhum, 1928 and the District Gazetteer for Dhanbad, 1964 are sources available to trace the historical background of the new Bokaro District. In fact, little information is available for Bokaro District alone.

Dhanbad district was established on the 24th.10.1956 on the recommendation of the State Reconstruction Commission. Dhanbad District at that time consisted of two sub-divisions viz. Dhanbad Sadar & Bagmar. Lo01.04.1991 Baghmara District, known as Chas District, became an inseparable part of Bokaro District.
