Employee Notice The State Insurance Act 1948 (ESI Act) passed by Parliament was the first major Occupational Social Security Act in independent India. It was a time when the industry was still in its infancy and the country was heavily dependent on a range of imported products from developed or rapidly developing countries.

The distribution of labor in manufacturing processes was limited to a few selected industries such as jute, textile, chemicals, etc. This is obviously a remarkable gesture for the socio-economic improvement of workspaces, albeit in limited numbers and geographical distribution. However, India then took the lead in providing organized social protection for the working class through legislation.

The ESI Act 1948 covers some health risks to which workers in general are exposed; such as illness, maternity, temporary or permanent incapacity for work, occupational disease or death resulting from an accident at work with consequent loss or partial or total loss of wages. The statutory social security provisions to compensate or offset the physical or financial suffering resulting from such situations therefore aim to protect human dignity in times of crisis by preventing deprivation, misery and social degradation, while enabling society to maintain a useful social condition and to track and productive workforce.
