The Indian Space Research Organization[a] (ISRO; /ɪsroʊ/) is India’s national space agency, headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka. It reportsto the Department of Outer Space (DOS), which reports directly to the Prime Minister of India, while the President of ISRO alsoserves as DOS’ManagingDirector. ISRO is India’sleading agency responsible for tasks related to space applications, space exploration and related technology development.

It is one of six national space agencies worldwidethathasextensive launch capabilities, deploys cryogenic engines, launches extraterrestrial missions and operates large fleets of artificial satellites. Research (INCOSPAR) was foundedin1962 by India’s first PrimeMinister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) at the request of scientist Vikram Sarabhai, whorecognized the need for space exploration.

INCOSPAR grew and became ISRO in 1969undertheDAE. In 1972, the Government of India establishedthe Space Commission and DOS, includingISRO.Thus,the establishment of ISRO hasinstitutionalized space exploration activities in India.Since then it has been administered by DOS, which operates various other institutions in the fields of astronomy and space technologyinIndia. ISRO built India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, launched by the Soviet Union in 1975.

In 1980, ISRO launched theRS-1 satellite aboard its SLV-3, making India the seventh country to be launchedintoorbit. SLV-3 was followed by ASLV, which was laterfollowed by the development of severalmedium-altitude launch vehicles, rocket engines, satellite systems, and arraysthatenabled the agency to launch hundreds of domestic and extraterrestrialmissions,aswellas various space explorationmissions.
