JandK Bank was established on October 1, 1938 under the patent of the then Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh. The Maharaja invited prominent investors to become the founding directors and shareholders of the bank. The bank began banking operations on July , 1939, and was considered the first state-owned bank in the country in terms of its nature and composition.

The bank was established as a semi-state bank with capital from the state and public under the control of the state government. After the Indo-Pakistani War of 19 7-19 8, the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided and two branches of the bank from the then 10 branches viz. Muzaffarabad Rawalkot and Mirpur (now PAK) were dropped across the LoC with cash and other assets.

According to the Indian Companies Act, 2013, the bank is defined as a government undertaking. In 1971, the bank was granted the status of a scheduled bank and was declared a Class A bank by the Reserve Bank of India in 1976 [citation needed] Milestones The bank celebrated its platinum jubilee year in 2013. That year, the bank had a total business of ₹ 1,000 billion and a net profit of ₹ 10 billion.

On 1 October 2018, the bank celebrated its 80th anniversary and launched a campaign with the theme “80 years of the league – I promise to strengthen it”.[ ] On 1 July 2019, the bank crossed the ₹ 1 trillion deposit mark with over 10 million customers.[5] As of July 2020, the bank was among the top four financial institutions in India to successfully achieve digital payment targets under the ‘Digital India’ mission.
