The development of horticulture in the state has an exciting historical background that reveals interesting facts, important achievements and a glorious heritage. Although some horticultural crops have been cultivated in the country since living memory, commercial cultivation only began two and a half centuries earlier. The main credit for introducing horticultural cultivation in the state undoubtedly goes to Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.

Around 1760 Hyder Ali planted a small royal orchard near Bangalore Fort, which was named Lalbagh. After him, Tipu Sultan perfected this garden by making systematic arrangements in and conducting an extensive planting program. He collected several important native and exotic species of flowers, fruits, vegetables and other plants, which he obtained from various remote locations such as Malacca, French Isles, Oman, Arabia, Persia, Turkey, Zanzibar, France and other European countries.

In Srirangapatna, his capital, he created another famous garden of the same name, Lalbagh, where he also introduced various ornamental and garden plants. In Ganjam, near Srirangapatna, he planted a huge fig garden. Various kinds of fruits then introduced by Tipu Sultan eventually became the crops of the then Mysore province, to name a few: fig, mulberry (for cheese growing), grape, pomegranate, rose, various European horticultural crops, etc.

After the fall of Tipu Sultan in 1799, Lalbagh was taken over by the British and, as far as can be ascertained, was owned by the military botanist Major Waugh until 1819.He then presented the garden to Marques Warren Hastings, Governor-General of the East India Company, who in turn gave Dr. Wallich, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kolkata, as Deputy Director of the Lalbagh Botanic Gardens.

This arrangement lasted until 1831, , . After the British usurpation of the province of Mysore in 1831, Lalbagh passed into the hands of Sir Mark Cubbon, the High Commissioner of Mysore. In 1839 the affairs of the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens were transferred to the Calcutta Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
