Mayurbhanj is situated in a unique place, blessed with lush greenery, diverse wildlife and rich cultural heritage. The district has a rich mineral base and is home to the Similipal Biosphere. Iron ore (hematite), vanadium- and titanium-bearing magnetite, chaina clay, galena (lead ore), kyanite, asbestos, steatite (soapstone) and quartzite are the main mineral resources of Mayurbhanj district, including iron ore deposits from Gorumahisani.

Badampahar and Suleipat are particularly noteworthy as they have been mined for about half a century. The rulers of the Bhanja dynasty continued to rule the country uninterruptedly from the 9th century AD.The name of the state under the early rulers of Bhanja was Khijjinga Mandala, named after the capital, Khijjinga Kotta. An engraved inscription by these rulers indicates that Khijjinga Mandala was a large territory encompassing present-day Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar Districts, as well as parts of Singhbhum District in Bihar and Medinapur District in West Bengal.

During the Mughal period, the territory of the Bhanja rulers extended to the sea and during this period the capital shifted from Khijjinga Kotta to Haripur in . The kings of Mayurbhanj pioneered cattle breeding in Odisha under British rule.In fact, during British rule it was one of the most advanced areas in the whole country. The Bhanja Kings established the state’s first medical school in Cuttack.

They donated large sums of money and land to found institutions of higher education such as Ravenshaw College. They were also responsible for the effort and eventually persuaded the British to build a railway to Odisha. Mayurbhanj state merged with Odisha state on January 1, 1949.Since the merger, Mayurbhanj is organized and managed as one of the districts of Odisha.
