NABARD is India’s premier development bank established in 1982 by an Act of Parliament to promote sustainable and equitable agricultural and rural development. In its journey of over four decades, the leading development finance institution has transformed the lives of Indian villages through agriculture financing, infrastructure development, banking technology, microfinance, rural entrepreneurship promotion through SHGs and JLGs and much more.

It further supports nation building through participatory economic and non-economic interventions, innovation, technology and institutional development in rural areas. IN GENESIS The recognition of the Government of India of the importance of institutional credit in promoting the rural economy led to the establishment of the Committee for the Evaluation of Institutional Credit in Agriculture and Rural Development (CRAFICARD).

It was established under the able leadership of Shri B. Sivaraman, former member of the Planning Commission on March 30, 1979. Acting on the recommendation of the Commission’s Interim Report, Parliament approved the establishment of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) through Act 61 of 1981.

This unique development finance institution was created to focus on credit issues related to rural development With this intention, the agricultural credit functions of RBI and the refinancing functions of the then Agriculture Refinance and Development Corporation (ARDC) were transferred to NABARD. It was owned by late Chief Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi on November 5, 1982. As a wholly owned entity of the Government of India, NABARD continues to write stories of prosperity in rural India.
