The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), now under the National Health Mission[1], is an initiative created by the Government of India to address the health needs of rural areas with low levels of care.Established on April 12, 2005 by then Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the NRHM was originally designed to address the health needs of 18 states that were found to have poor public health indicators.
The Union Cabinet,led by Man mohan Singh,by order of May 1, 2013, authorized the launch of the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) as a subordinate to the parent National Health Mission (NHM), with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) being the second mission of national health mission. The NRHM focused on the countries of the Empowered Action Group (EAG) andthe North East, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
The core of the mission is to establish a fully functioning,decentralized,community-owned health care system with cross-sectoral convergence at all levels to ensure the simultaneous functioning of a wide range of health determinants such as water, sanitation, education, nutrition, social equity and gender equality.Institutional integration in the fragmented health sector should focus on the performance of all health facilities measured against Indian public health standards.
Accordingto the Planning Commission’sPlan12document, the NRHM flagship program will be strengthened under the auspices of the National Health Mission. The focus willre main on rural area and rural population coverageas NRHM expands to noncommunicable diseases and health care expands to urban areas. Therefore, in May 2013, the Cabinet approved the launch of the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) as a sub-mission of the National Comprehensive Health Mission (NHM), while the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is a mission of the National Health Mission. InMarch2018it was extended to March 2020.
