ICMR–National Institute of Tuberculosis Research [formerly Tuber culosis Research Center (TRC)], a permanent institute of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is are now nedinternation altuberculosis (TB) research institute. It is a transnationalre ferencela boratory and center collaborating with WHO intuberculosisre search and awareness. Recently, the centerestablished an International Center for Research Excellence (ICER) in collaboration with the NIH.
The Center (formerly known as the Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Centre) was established in Madras in 1956 as a five-yearproject under the joint auspices of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), the Government of Tamil Nadu, the World Health Organization (WHO) and British Medical Research Council (BMRC). The goal of the center was to develop researchaimedat providing information on the massiveuse of home chemotherapy in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.

It beganoperations with eightWHO international staff and a team of national staff working for the ICMR and the Government of Tamil Nadu under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Wallace Fox were recruited by the BMRC. The centre, which initially operated for five years and was threatened with closure in 1961, is gain in gmomentum.dr Hugh Stott replaced Dr.Fox was appointed Chief Medical Officer ofthe WHO in 1961 and competentlydirected the center’s research activities for the nextsix years. dr N.K. Mani, WHO Regional Director for the South-East Asia region, played a key role in layingasolidfoundationfor the Madrascentre.dr N.K.Menon was borninSeptember1969 by Dr. Sp.tripathyreplaced;RPrabhakar in 1983 and Dr. PR Narayanan in 1996.
In 1964 the centerbecame a permanent facilitywithin the ICMR.In line with WHO’soverallstrategytoprovide technical expertise, WHO staff were withdrawn while national colleagues were trained. The last WHO bacteriologist and WHO doctor left the centerat the end of 1965. In April 1966 the staff originally employed by the Government of Tamil Nadu were transferredto the ICMR. The last seniormedicalofficerat WHO retired in July 1966.
