The lignite deposit was discovered accidentally when an artesian well was found in 193 with “brown matter” on the 620-acre private farm of Rao Bahadur M. Jambulingam Mudaliar. He acted quickly and contacted the then British Raj who sent geologists to Neyvel. Later it was identified as brown sand. He generously extended a considerable portion of the scattered land for soil exploration.
Through his efforts, he donated 620 acres of his land to the Government of Madras. Rao Bahadur T.M. Jambulinga Mudaliar NLC has been the country’s pioneer in the power sector for 62 years and its share of lignite production is the lion’s share and a significant share in thermal power production.
It was inaugurated in 1956 by the first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. NLC operates four open pit lignite mines at Neyvel and Barsingsar with a total capacity of 30.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA); Six lignite-based thermal power plants with a total capacity of 3,6 0 MW in Neyveli and Barsingsar; and a 1,000 MW coal-based thermal power plant at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu through its subsidiary NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL), a joint venture between NLC and TANGEDCO (equity 89:11).
NLC recently commissioned a 1×500 MW unit at Neyvel, which is also Asia’s largest lignite-fired boiler. NLC also forayed into the renewable energy sector by commissioning 1 1 MW solar power, including a 1 MW rooftop project in Neyveli and a 51 MW wind farm at Kazhuneerkulam village in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The company is also setting up 1,209 MW of solar power projects in Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu, of which 300 MW has been commissioned.
NLC plans to achieve a total renewable energy capacity of ,251 MW. NLCIL plans to become a 20,000 MW company by 2025. The new lignite-based Neyvel Thermal Power Plant (1000 MW), Bithnok TPS and Barsingsar TPS Expansion (both 250 MW) are currently under construction. In addition, NLC along with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) through its subsidiary Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL) is setting up a 3×660 MW coal based thermal power plant at Ghatampur, Uttar Pradesh (51: 9 stake). ).
In addition to the above, there are plans to increase the thermal capacity to 6,0 0 MW by building new plants and acquiring power assets to 3,000 MW. Also, NLC has contributed significantly to socio-economic development for more than half a century.
