National Seeds Corporation Ltd. (NSC) is a B-Miniratna Class I Company wholly owned by the Government of India under the administrative control of the Department of Agricultural Cooperation and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. NSC was established in March 1963 to engage in the production of basic and certified seeds. Currently, the company produces certified seeds of nearly 567 varieties of 78 crops comprising cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fibres, fodder, green manure and vegetables at its farms and through registered seed breeders.

There are about 5 farms and 11,603 registered seed growers in different parts of the country who are engaged in seed production in various agro-climatic conditions. Total revenue of NSC F.Y. 2021-22 was 915.72 million. The district has 11 regional offices, 5 farms consisting of 22,000 hectares of land, 8 regional offices/sub-units, 30 seed production centers and 107 distribution centers, 76 seed breeding plants, 7 air-conditioned seed warehouses, 2 vegetable seed packing centers. . and 01 DNA Finger Printing laboratories of the company spread across the country.

In seed production, the emphasis is on the production of oilseeds, pulses and hybrids, including vegetables. NSC has implemented a strict quality control procedure to ensure that good quality seeds are supplied to farmers. NSC has set up quality control laboratories, one each in New Delhi, Secunderabad, Bhopal and Suratgarh to conduct seed tests to check seed quality. In addition to the production and marketing of high quality seeds, NSC is also involved in the production of tissue culture plants such as bananas.

He also supplies saplings/saplings of fruit plants from top seed orchards of his farms. Marketing of seeds is done through various channels namely sale through dealers/distributors, Govt. (State/Centre), through NSC owned outlet and Kisan Melas. The company has about 3,301 distributors, whose share of sales is more than 50%. To diversify, NSC started fish seed production at farms in Suratgarh (Rajasthan) and Raichur (Karnataka). NSC has also set up a Fodder Block production unit at its Raichur farm to ensure efficient utilization of crop residues into quality fodder.

NSC has developed various infrastructure facilities in its farms for micro irrigation systems, water conservation, farm mechanization, threshing, seed germination plants and seed storage. NSC has also developed infrastructural facilities for seed preservation facilities and seed storage points in its regional/regional offices at suitable locations. All these infrastructures help in producing quality seeds. The NSC plays a key role in the implementation of various schemes of the government.

National Oilseeds and Palm Oil Mission of India (NMOOP), National Food Security Mission (NFSM) and Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH). It also provides technical support to seed production institutions, including national seed companies, by training staff involved in seed production in that organization. NSC is the nodal body implementing the central sector scheme to create infrastructural facilities for setting up processing plants and warehouses in various states in the private sector.

NSC is also engaged in exporting seeds globally, especially to SAARC countries and African countries. SAARC Seed Bank managed by NSC with support from Govt. India possesses the greater number. seeds of different crops/varieties to meet the demand during natural calamities like floods, drought etc. NSC also takes care of meeting the demand of farmers for quality seeds in the interior regions of the country like North Eastern states and other hilly areas.
