Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, hereinafter referred to as NVS, is an autonomous organization subordinate to the Ministry of Education, Department of School Education and Literature, Government of India. The company is headquartered in NOIDA (Uttar Pradesh), 08 regional offices in Bhopal, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Patna, Pune and India.

Shillong and over 649 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) operate across India except Tamil Nadu. Over 96 NIDs operate in the north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura in the Shillong region. JNVs are comprehensive, co-educational through secondary boarding schools located primarily in rural areas.

NIDs are fully residential facilities. Teachers must reside on the Vidyalaya campus where free accommodation will be provided subject to availability. In addition to normal classroom duties, teachers are expected to perform housing system tasks such as cleaning, remedial teaching and supervision, organizing extracurricular activities, accompanying immigrant students and for other professional purposes, and generally looking after the welfare of the students.
