Power Grid Corporation of India Limited was incorporated on 23 October 1989[4] under the Companies Act 1956 with an authorized share capital of Rs.34%stake as ofDecember31,2020is wholly owned by the Government of India andranksas the leading power transmission company in the country.
Originally named”National Power Transmission Corporation Limited”,it was responsible for the design,construction,ownership,operation and maintenance of the country’s high voltage transmission systems.[4] On November 8, 1990, the company received its articles of incorporation.Its name was later changed to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited on 23 October 1992.
Power Grid Management[5] started operations in August 1991 and subsequently acquired the transmission business of National Thermal Power (NTPC), National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)], North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) and other companies like NPC, THDC, SJVNL.
