The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an organization under the Government of India that recruits personnel for various positions in various ministries and departments and subordinate agencies of the Government of India. This commission is a subsidiary office of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) consisting of a Chairman, two members and a Secretary, Controller of Examinations. His post is equivalent to that of Additional Secretary to the Government of India.
SSC has decided to conduct the Multi-Task (Non-Technical) Cooperative Examination in 13 Indian languages which are Urdu, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Konkani, Meitei ( Manipuri), Marathi, Odia. and Punjabi, Hindi and English in addition to the 22 official languages of the Republic of India for the first time in January 2023.
The Budget Committee of Parliament in its 7th Report (1967-68) recommended the establishment of a Service Selection Board for recruitment to lower posts. Later, the Government of India set up a commission called the Secondary Service Commission on November , 1975 in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms. On September 26, 1977, the Secondary Service Commission was renamed the Personnel Selection Commission.
The Government of India redefined the functions of the Staff Selection Commission through the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and on 21 May 1999. Later, on 1 June 1999, the new constitution and functions of the Staff Selection Commission came into effect. Every year it conducts the Combined Graduate Tasemeeksam for the recruitment of officers for various government posts.
