Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) is one of the eight subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL) under the administration of the Ministry of Coal. A company incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 has its registered office at Coal Estate, Civil Lines, Nagpur- 0001. WCL was granted “Miniratna” status on 15.3.2007. The company’s share of the country’s coal production in 201 -2015 is approximately 6.7%. It has mining operations in the states of Maharashtra (Nagpur, Chandrapur and Yeotmal districts) and Madhya Pradesh (Betuli and Chhindwara districts).
The company is a major source of coal for industries in the western Indian states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, and the southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. A large number of power houses under Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh – Electricity Boards are major consumers of coal for cement, steel, chemical, fertiliser, paper and brick industries in those states.
Manoj Kumar is the current Chairman and Managing Director of Western Coal Mines.[2] Western Coalfields Limited’s total production was 57.6 .15 tonnes in 2019–2020 compared to 39.73 tonnes in 2013–201 , an increase of 3.6%.[3] Since 201 -2015, the company has built 20 new coal projects with a capacity of 0 tons per year. Western Coalfields Ltd has launched an action plan to achieve more than 75 million tonnes of production by 2023-202 as part of parent company Coal India’s ambitious target of 1 billion tonnes.
On June 6, 2020, Western Coalfields opened two mines in Madhya Pradesh and one mine in Maharashtra. Adasa UG for OC mine in Nagpur and two mines in Chhindwara Sharda Mines in Kanhan District and Dhankhasa Mines in Pench District
