Bank Note Press, Dewas, an industrial unit of the Government of India, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Economy, was established in 1969 and 1974 respectively. It is located near the famous Chamunwashwari hill in the small town of Dewas in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh and covers an area of ​​185 hectares.

It was the only company to implement the new technology “Intaglio Printing for South Asia Region” and in a very short time managed to become a dominant player in printing high quality banknotes with higher security features in the last 30 years. The RBI entrusts Bank Note Press with the sovereign task of printing and fulfilling the ever-increasing demand for higher denominations.

The company was established to produce new world class family banknotes of high quality to make counterfeiting more difficult by combining the latest modern techniques such as gravure printing, dry offset printing with security features such as continuous shadowing, block pattern, transparent patterns, use of fluorescent inks, etc.

The design of the banknote press, as well as the machines and technology to build the unit, were obtained through the conclusion of an agreement with M/s De La Rue Giori and Koeing & Bauer, now known as KBA Giori SA, Switzerland, is a pioneer in the manufacture of security machinery and related equipment. Production began in 1974 and the first batch of the new banknote family was delivered to the Reserve Bank of India in March 1975.

The banknote press is equipped with all high-quality banknote printing and processing equipment and has multiple wings to control various activities such as printing, quality control, engineering, auditing group, support group and management group. The security inks needed to print the banknotes are produced in Ink, which was created in 1973 on the premises of the printing shop with the main factory, and which also covers the needs of the other SPMCIL units.
