The history of formal education in Meghalaya is recent, beginning with the formulation of the Khasi alphabet in 18 2 by Reverend Thomas Jones, a Welsh missionary. Similarly, the Garo alphabet in Roman script was developed by American missionaries in 1902 for the Garo Hills. Thus Christian missionaries were the first to introduce modern education in the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo hills.

As the demands of an educated society were not high during the colonial period, only a few primary schools functioned in what is now Meghalaya. Only in 192 the Irish Christian brothers established the first college in Shillong. Being a hill station blessed with weather and strong colonial influence, several quality colleges and public schools have been established over the years. Alumni of these schools are spread across the country and their traces can be found all over the world. Some of them hold very prestigious positions and high positions also abroad.
