In the late 1950s, as part of the quality policy for engineering education, the Government of India decided to set up Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) – one in each major state – with the main purpose of providing quality engineering education across the country and promoting national integration.

These regional engineering schools were established as a joint venture between the Government of India and the respective state governments. Assam is considered the flag bearer of the Northeast India flag, which is why the 15th REC was formally established at Silchar in 1967. However, due to various limitations, it took almost a decade for REC Silchar to start its undergraduate courses.

The first batch of students were admitted to the BE program in 1977 in three engineering disciplines, namely civil, mechanical and electrical engineering.The total number of students enrolled in the first group was 60. The inadequate infrastructure consisted of only part of the dormitory, two Assam buildings (for teaching and administration), a laboratory building, seven teachers’ quarters and some staff quarters, as the college was to be in November 1977 academic program started.

First under the then Dean Dr. MR.Chablani, classes started with just four full-time teachers. The College began its academic program with an affiliation with Gauhati University. The first BE students graduated in 1982-83. Then, in 1983 and 1 , two more faculties became operational: Electronics and Telecommunications and Computer Science and Engineering. The affiliation was later transferred to Assam University in 1994.
